The term SMART IEPs describes IEPs that are specific, measurable, use action words, are realistic and relevant, and time-limited.
S Specific – target areas of academic achievement and functional performance
M Measurable – count or observe it
A Use Action Words – e.g. “The child will be able to . . .”
R Realistic and relevant – address the child’s unique needs
T Time-limited – enable you to monitor progress at regular intervals
